In 2004, we started our first seminar on freeze drying in the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Erlangen. The great success and positive feedback of the attendees during this initial seminar gave us, the Freeze Drying Focus Group (FDFG), sufficient motivation to continue with a seminar on an annual basis. After 2004, 2006 – 2011, and 2013 – 2015 we are planning in 2016 for our eleventh annual seminar which will be held on Wednesday, March 9 2016. Until today our seminar is well known as:
“The Erlangen Seminar”
When we first came up with the idea of such a seminar, it was our goal to bring interested people from academia, pharmaceutical industry and vendors / suppliers of equipment together for a day to initiate sound scientific discussions in the field of freeze drying. In addition, it was (and still is) a goal to provide an update on the latest trends and research interests during this event in this field. Also, from the very beginning, it was important to us to keep the seminar expenses moderate for the participants, and thus allow more people in different positions to attend. The seminar has no commercial basis, the registration fee is issued to cover our expenses. When we realize a profit, it will be re-invested in the education of students or equipment maintenance.
In 2016, we try something new. Over the last years, the Erlangen Seminar was solely given in German as a course language. Now, in 2016 the seminar will be given in English which allows participants throughout Europe to participate. This sees us responding to the trend toward seminar requests outside the German speaking countries.
The organization of the seminar day will be as follows:
In the morning session, two lectures will be given covering the “basic principles” of freeze drying. The goal is to provide a wide range of various aspects / background information on freeze drying science to the audience. This session will be quite helpful for those of you who are new to the subject, and others to refresh their knowledge!
The second session in the afternoon will be covering some “special topics” which require more time for detailed explanation. These talks will be a balance between general reviews and actual research data. In the middle of the afternoon, the participants will also get a chance to actually “look” at equipment which is mentioned during the talks. Get a few hands on tips from the experts!
The Erlangen Seminar 2016 is an excellent start in the “world of freeze drying”. If you consider to attend other freeze drying conferences in the same year, the lectures may provide (or refresh) your knowledge-base to better understand purely scientific presentations.
The seminar presentations will be jointly given by the Freeze Drying Focus Group (FDFG) and GILYOS GmbH, both are founded (and headed) by Dr. Henning Gieseler.
November 2015: The agenda and the registration form of the Erlangen Seminar 2016 is now ready for download. As known from former seminars, the number of participants is limited. Hurry up, this seminar fills up very quickly!
